18th IMPERIA WINTER REGATTA ˆ LAST DAY FOR DOUBLE HANDEDImperia, 9 December 2007
Last races for 470 and 420 classes at Imperia Winter Regatta the international event held in the ancient Oneglia harbour.
The last day began with an overcast sky and some drizzling but as soon as midday the sun started to shine bringing a Northeasterly breeze up to 8/10 knots allowing to fire the first start. As past days 420s and 470s were racing on different sail areas.
420 female fleet was the first to start with black flag after a general recall: once again Spanish Suria Palop/Basterra Moyua kept the lead of the fleet since start increasing more and more their advantage over following teams.
In the second race the wind shifted eastbound becoming an easterly wind, same ΣstrenghthΣ first team to cross the finishing line was the Junior European Champion, German team Lutz/Beucke.
Winner of the final results after 4 races (no discard as Σprevisto.. after 5 races) is the Spanish team Suria Palop/Basterra Moyua followed by two Italian teams Barbera /Bocca from lake of Garda who scored a regular series of daily results and Di Laghi/Gandolfo from Liguria region.
On the male sal area only one race could be sailed: three races then for the final results (no discard as well). The winner of overall results was the Greek crew Stavrou/Orfanos and the Italian team Maccari/Vitali from Como lake was the first to cross the finishing lie in the last race of the series. The Greek team Tsokaras/Mogadam who was well ahead in the previus day damaging his results by scoring a OCS. Second was British Saxton/De Bolz, third another Greek team Petrogonas/Kounas.
On 470 sail area since the start the wind was blowing steadily from East: two races had been sailed for a total number of six races (one discard).
At the end of the series the best team scoring the first place was Finish crew Lindgren/Helander, winner aswell of the fifth race. The overall results show Italian team Cherin/Noè from Trieste in the second place and other Italian team Capodanno/Giordano from Naples on third one.
Russian girls literally swept the board by adding some more two first placet to the already scored three ones out of the six races sailed: there shoud have bee even five if they didn‚t score an OCS in the first race of the opening day. Second place for Italian Stacciali/Brighenti from Rome and third place for German Wolf/Hanitzsch.
Now next date of 19th Imperia Winter Regatta is already fixed for 30 November-8 the December 2008. SAVE THE DATE!
Main sponsor of IWR is the famous hat company Borsalino: a special Borsalino prize will be awarded to the winners of 470 class both male and female.
The IWR is an ISAF Grade 3 event.
